About Me

Hello! I'm Sunghee – a math enthusiast, tech advocate, deep thinker, and above all, a people person. I'm passionate about math, convex optimization, technolgoy, AI, cognitive science, natural sciences, biotech, medical tech & science, philosophy, theology, history, enlightenment, and mindfulness, but more than anything else, I love exploring the intersections of technology with business, markets, economy, sustainability, and society.

I am a firm believer in the power of human connection and the importance of finding meaning and values in our communities, rather than blindly pursuing development and progress, especially in the realms of technology and economy. (You can find out more about me here especially around my professional life.)

Welcome to my space, where I share my insights and values. Let's connect!

Mathematics Genealogy Project

Here is a huge (but obviously not exhausive) mathematician genealogy directed graph where I found I can be related to Johann Bernoulli, Leonhard Euler, Jean-Baptiste Joseph Fourier, Siméon Denis Poisson, Pierre-Simon Laplace, Carl Friedrich Gauß, Rudolf Otto Sigismund Lipschitz, and C. Felix (Christian) Klein along various paths. (Here are some additional graphs varying in size - 10 15 20 30.) (Source: Mathematics Genealogy Project)

For example, I am related to Carl Friedrich Gauß because

  • he was an advisor of Christian Ludwig Gerling,
  • who was an advisor of Julius Plüfccker,
  • who was an advisor of C. Felix (Christian) Klein,
  • who was an advisor of C. L. Ferdinand (Carl Louis) Lindemannt,
  • who was an advisor of Arnold Johannes Wilhelm Sommerfeld,
  • who was an advisor of Ernst Adolph Guillemin,
  • who was an advisor of Robert Mario Fano,
  • who was an advisor of Charles Auguste Desoer,
  • who was an advisor of Prof. Stephen P. Boyd at Stanford University,
  • who is a former advisor of mine!

You see ... I am related to Carl Friedrich Gauss not only because I founded and was a CTO of Gauss Labs Inc., but also my advisor's advisor's ... advisor was Gauss!

My Piano Story - Finding Joy in Every Note

The piano has become an integral part of my life, though I can't pinpoint exactly when or how this love affair began. While I may not possess the innate talent of Arthur Rubinstein, I've discovered a unique gift—excellent sight-reading (Prima vista in Italian) skill, that is, the ability to play pieces remarkably well at first sight.

This skill, combined with the sheer joy of creating music, has fueled my passion for the instrument. There's something magical about sitting at the keys, knowing that I can bring forth a symphony of sounds with just my fingertips. It's this sense of wonder and accomplishment that keeps me coming back to the piano time and time again.

My love for the piano deepened in an unexpected moment during my ninth-grade year in 1990. As I was playing one day, I was suddenly overwhelmed by a profound feeling—one that I still struggle to put into words. In that instant, I understood more clearly than ever before why music is beautiful. I believe I touched upon the same emotion that has drawn countless others into the world of music. Since that day, the piano has become an inseparable part of who I am.

In this section of my blog, I'm excited to share some of my recordings with you. Though I'm an amateur, I hope you can sense the love and joy that infuse every note I play.
