This capacity for pattern completion served our ancestors well when the cost of false positives (assuming danger where none existed) was merely wasted energy, while false negatives (missing actual threats) could be fatal.

But in our complex, interconnected world, this same cognitive machinery can lead us into elaborate misconceptions that are often more harmful than simple ignorance.

Living at the epicenter of the AI revolution in Silicon Valley, I’ve witnessed this principle operate at scale in ways that could reshape human civilization. The technology industry consistently presents partial information about AI capabilities, creating elaborate public narratives about artificial general intelligence, consciousness, and technological singularity based on impressive but narrow demonstrations.

In practical terms, this suggests several strategies.

Epistemic Humility – actively tracking the completeness and representativeness of our information, not just its quantity or apparent quality.

Pattern Interruption – deliberately questioning the mental models we construct from partial data, especially when those models feel particularly compelling or complete.

Strategic Uncertainty – preserving uncertainty as valuable information about information—knowing what we don’t know often matters more than knowing what we think we know.

The Information-Action Gap

Here’s where the philosophical rubber meets the practical road – we must act in the world based on incomplete information. The question isn’t whether to use partial information—that’s unavoidable. The question is how to use it wisely.

The key insight from my mathematical (and or rather statistical or probabilistic) background is that this isn’t a binary choice between information and ignorance, but an optimization problem involving uncertainty quantification. The theories and tools I developed for Convex Optimization provide a framework: we can optimize decisions while explicitly modeling our uncertainty about missing information.

In my current work at Erudio Bio, Inc., developing AI-powered biomarker platforms, this principle becomes literally a matter of life and death. Medical decisions based on partial biomarker information can be worse than decisions made with honest acknowledgment of ignorance. The key is building systems that provide explicit uncertainty estimates rather than false confidence.

The Meta-Information Problem

Implications for AI and Human-Technology Interaction

As we enter the Age of Agentic AI, this principle becomes increasingly critical. AI systems are, by their very nature, generators of partial information. They provide outputs based on training data that is necessarily incomplete, biased, and historically contingent.

The danger isn’t that AI provides wrong answers—that would be manageable. The danger is that AI provides partial information that feels complete, triggering our pattern-completion mechanisms to construct elaborate, confident, but incorrect mental models about reality.

My work on private AI at CryptoLab as an advisor addresses one aspect of this challenge – ensuring that AI systems can operate on sensitive data without revealing information that could trigger harmful inferences. But the broader challenge requires rethinking how we design human-AI interfaces to preserve appropriate uncertainty rather than create false confidence.

The Bridge Between Eastern and Western Wisdom

This analysis bridges insights from my exploration of Buddhist philosophy with principles from Western cognitive science and mathematics. The Buddhist recognition that attachment to incomplete mental constructions causes suffering aligns precisely with the cognitive science insight that partial information often leads to overconfident errors.

Both traditions point toward the same practical wisdom – sometimes the wisest response to partial information is not to seek more information, but to recognize the incompleteness of what we have and maintain appropriate uncertainty.

This doesn’t mean embracing nihilistic skepticism or paralyzing doubt. Rather, it means developing what I call “dynamic epistemic fluidity”—the ability to hold mental models lightly, update them as new information arrives, and resist the cognitive pressure to complete partial patterns prematurely.

The path forward requires developing new cognitive skills and social institutions that preserve appropriate uncertainty, resist premature pattern completion, and maintain what Buddhist philosophy calls “don’t-know mind”—not as ignorance, but as openness to reality as it actually is rather than as our pattern-completion mechanisms want it to be.

Most importantly, recognizing when partial information becomes worse than no information helps us ask better questions—not just “What do we know?” but “What do we think we know that we actually don’t know?” and “How might our incomplete information be systematically misleading us?”

Rescuing Democratic Discourse

Perhaps nowhere is this analysis more urgent than in rebuilding functional democratic discourse. The solution isn’t more information—we’re already drowning in partial information masquerading as complete knowledge. The solution is developing what we might call “democratic epistemic humility” – the collective recognition that political decision-making requires acknowledging uncertainty rather than constructing confident narratives from incomplete data.

This means designing information systems that preserve uncertainty rather than eliminate it, political institutions that reward nuanced thinking rather than confident simplicity, and educational approaches that teach citizens to recognize when they’re constructing complete political worldviews from insufficient information.

The alternative—continued construction of elaborate, confident, but incompatible political realities from partial information—threatens not just individual decision-making but the foundational assumption of democratic governance: that informed citizens can engage in productive collective deliberation about shared challenges.

In our age of information abundance, the scarcest resource may not be data, but wisdom about when to stop collecting it and start acknowledging our fundamental uncertainty. Sometimes the most informed decision is the decision to remain usefully ignorant rather than confidently wrong.

  1. Initially, I suspected these cognitive biases might be specific to Homo Sapiens—perhaps quirks of our particular evolutionary history rather than universal features of intelligence.
